In Vavochka, the widowed mother, Alexandra Iasneva, who is a music tutor, has kept up a cozy association with a neighborhood physician, Tikhmenev, for a long time, while her little girl Vavochka is away at school. Iasneva refuses to wed him, be that as it may, until her little girl goes on her own independent way. However, after graduation, the post-pubescent Vavochka returns home. Denied of her virginity, Vavochka loses any shade of the blamelessness she may have asserted in her tease with Tikhmenev.
